Single choice

Users often need to specify some kind of simple and exclusive choice option in the registration form, e.g. variables where only one answer or value is possible. In this case, two component types are suitable, depending on the situation.

Available Components

ComponentDescription
Radio buttonsUsed when there are few options to choose from and/or where the option texts are short. Radio buttons are used automatically if there are fewer than five (5) options. Unlike classic radio buttons, it is possible to select and then deselect an option.
Drop-down listUsed when there are many options and/or where the option texts are long. Drop-down lists are used automatically if there are more than five (5) options.

Usage Scenarios

A registry can decide on a case-by-case basis when to use radio buttons or drop-down lists

  • One advantage of radio buttons is that the options are visible immediately, which often simplifies input.
  • Choose the drop-down list in case of many options, or if the options have long names. This provides a clear form that becomes more compact and readable.
  • When choosing whether to include an empty response option in a dropdown list, consider whether having the user make an active choice is preferable to a preselected default option. In general, letting the user make an active choice leads to higher data input quality. On the other hand, a default single choice simplifies data entry somewhat, assuming that it represents the correct choice in the majority of cases. As with classic radio buttons, there should be a good reason for choosing this option, otherwise it is better to include an empty preselected option.
